Back-to-School Ear Health: Give Them the Best Start
With the Scottish schools opening their doors again, many families are squeezing in those shoe fittings and last minute essentials. But there’s one small check that can make a big difference to your child’s start: their ears.
Everyday clues to watch (and listen) for;
Say "What?” or “Eh?” a little too often, especially when being asked to do something or while watching TV.
Turning the volume up on tablets, headphones or the car radio.
Complaints of a “blocked” or “fizzy” ear after swimming or showering.
Missing instructions the first time round or seeming distracted when spoken to from behind.
Saying the teacher “mumbles” or classmates are “too loud”.
Falling over, pulling ears, speech development.
These are all strong indicators of Ear Wax.
Children’s ear canals are narrower than adults’, so wax can accumulate more quickly, particularly after a summer of sunscreen, swimming pools and earplugs.
What can be done?
Give their ears a brief look-over at home. A small torch can help spot obvious wax near the opening (never insert cotton buds).
Ask how things sound at school or in group situations. Especially if they mention muffled speech or if they struggle to focus.
Watch for volume habits. Consistently high headphone volume can be a sign they’re compensating.
Seek an ear health appointment if you’re unsure. Our aural care specialists can tell in minutes whether wax removal is needed or if everything is fine to leave alone.
Here’s to a term of clear listening and confident answers👂🎒
