Most Common Foreign Objects in our Clinics

The top five most common foreign objects that we remove from patients ears;

  1. Cotton Swab Tips: Often, when patients are using cotton buds, the tip of a cotton swab detach and remain lodged in the ear canal, posing risks of irritation or infection. (cotton buds should never be used inside the ear)

  2. Beads: Small, colourful beads are particularly attractive to children and can easily be inserted into the ear during play, leading to potential blockages.

  3. Insects: It's not uncommon for small insects to crawl into the ear canal, especially in environments where insects are prevalent or while sleeping outdoors.

  4. Small Toys or Toy Parts: Tiny toy components are just the right size to get lodged in a child's ear.

  5. Hearing Aid Parts: Parts of hearing aids, such as batteries or small components, can become dislodged and stuck, especially with frequent use or improper handling.

These instances display the importance of seeking professional advice from our medically trained staff to help for safe removal, to avoid damaging the sensitive inner ear structures.

Hear Like a Hero

Don't suffer in silence. We often have same day appointments available at our Glasgow & Edinburgh Clinics. Let's get you hearing again!

  • Can children undergo ear wax removal? (Ear Wax Removal for Kids)
Yes, We are one of the few licensed ear care clinics capable of treating children and adults of all ages. Children can safely undergo ear wax removal, provided they are of an age where they can remain relatively still during the procedure. Our clinic offers a child-friendly environment and techniques specifically suited to younger patients, ensuring their comfort and safety throughout the process. If my child can't sit still will I still be charged? If a child cannot remain still, we may not complete the procedure for safety reasons. In such cases, full payment is required as the appointment slot is fully allocated to the patient, involving preparation, staff time, and facility use. However, we understand the unique challenges with young patients and offer a complimentary follow-up appointment to successfully complete the procedure when the child is more prepared. How do I book my child in for ear wax removal? It is important that we first speak to you over the phone to confirm you understand the points above. Please call us on 0141 482 7004 or 0131 356 0012
  • Will I feel pain during ear wax removal?
Ear wax removal is generally a painless procedure. Our procedures can be explained as a gentle flow of water for (irrigation) and a tiny hover which sucks the wax our of the ear (microsuction). Some clients might experience minor discomfort or an unusual sensation due to the removal techniques or the sensation of the equipment in the ear canal. Our NHS accredited practitioners are skilled in making the process as comfortable as possible, and any discomfort should be temporary and mild. The practitioner will stop immediately if the patient has any discomfort.
  • How long are your practitioners trained for, and what does their training entail?
Our practitioners undergo comprehensive training to ensure they provide the highest standard of care. The initial training consists of a 4-week course, segmented into four detailed modules. These include a dedicated anatomy day to deepen their understanding of the ear structures. Following this foundation, EARS Clinics sponsor their practitioners to undertake a rigorous 12-month diploma in England, covering all aspects of ear health. The diploma's curriculum is extensive, ensuring our practitioners are well-versed not only in ear wax removal procedures but in overall ear health care. Our practitioners are regularly assessed by our NHS Accredited Trainer to maintain and uphold our high company standards. EARS Clinics pride themselves on having one of the most intensive and structured training programs in the industry, emphasising quality and patient care above all. This comprehensive approach ensures that our team is equipped with the knowledge and skills to provide exceptional service to our patients. Please note: Unlike the usual practice where staff might only have a short 1-2 day training focused just on removing ear wax, our training is much more in-depth, covering all areas of ear health care.

Yes, even if no ear wax is found during your appointment, you will still be charged the standard £60. The cost is for an appointment with an experienced Aural Care Specialist. If this check reveals any other complications, we will provide guidance on how to manage these issues at home. Should there be a need for further medical intervention, we will coordinate directly with your GP or an ENT specialist to ensure you receive the appropriate care. Our goal is to ensure your ear health is thoroughly evaluated and any concerns are addressed, regardless of the presence of ear wax. Please Note: Clinics that do offer a reduced rate for no ear wax tend not to be Aural Care Specialists, such as pharmacists and other wax removal clinics who are not regulated by Healthcare Improvement Scotland.
  • What should I do to prepare for an ear wax removal appointment?
Yes and No, Typically, there's no need for any special preparation ahead of your ear wax removal appointment. However, if you're aware that your ear wax is particularly stubborn, or if this is your first experience with wax removal, we suggest a simple preparatory step to enhance the ease and comfort of the procedure. We suggest applying over-the-counter olive oil ear drops the day before your appointment and once again on the day of your visit. This helps to soften the wax, facilitating a more seamless and gentle removal process. Please note: Pre-treatment with ear drops is not mandatory. If needed, our Aural Care Specialist can apply a special oil during your visit to soften the wax. You won't be turned away for not using ear drops beforehand. In cases where the procedure cannot be completed due to particularly hard wax, we offer a complimentary follow-up appointment to ensure successful removal after the wax has been adequately softened.
  • Are there any side effects or risks associated with ear wax removal?
Ear wax removal is a very low-risk procedure, but as with any medical intervention, there are potential side effects, albeit rare. These may include temporary dizziness, mild discomfort, or a temporary ringing sensation in the ears (tinnitus). Our NHS Accredited Aural Care Specialists take every precaution to minimize these risks and ensure a safe and comfortable experience. Once you have booked your appointment, you will receive an email asking you to complete a consent form. This form explains the procedure and associated risks. If you have any questions or concerns, please call us on 0141 482 7004 or 0131 356 0012
  • What methods do you use for ear wax removal?

The choice of method depends on the patients condition, the consistency and amount of ear wax, and personal comfort. Each method has its advantages, and our NHS Accredited Aural Care Specialists are trained to determine the most effective approach for each case. This will be determined after your initial consultation and initial photographs.
  • How do I know if I need ear wax removal? (Symptoms)
Key indications and symptoms that suggest you might need ear wax removal include: Diminished Hearing: Reduced ability to hear, which can affect one or both ears. Discomfort or Pain: Any level of discomfort or pain within the ear, potentially indicating wax build-up. Fullness or Pressure: A sensation of the ear being clogged or under pressure, making it feel blocked. Tinnitus: Persistent noises such as ringing, buzzing, or humming in the ear, not caused by external sounds. Dizziness: Experiences of unsteadiness or vertigo, suggesting inner ear involvement. Itchiness: Persistent itching in the ear canal, which might lead to scratching and further irritation. Ear Infections: Recurrent ear infections, which can be exacerbated by trapped moisture due to wax blockage. Odour or Discharge: An unusual odour or discharge from the ear, which might indicate an underlying issue. Coughing: Reflex coughing triggered by irritation from ear wax pressing on the vagus nerve. Additionally, if you are scheduled for a hearing test, it is highly recommended to undergo ear wax removal beforehand. Excessive ear wax can obstruct the ear canal, preventing the accurate assessment of your hearing capabilities. Without clear pathways, the hearing test may not be completed successfully, and the results could be skewed, leading to inaccurate diagnoses or recommendations. Ensuring your ears are clear of wax helps in obtaining precise hearing test outcomes. During your consultation, we assess these symptoms and examine your ears to determine the necessity and suitability of ear wax removal.

Previous Ear Surgery: Any history of surgical intervention that might have altered the anatomy or sensitivity of the ear canal. Perforated Eardrum: Special care is needed to avoid any procedures that could exacerbate this condition. Narrow or Oddly Shaped Ear Canals: Unique anatomical features that require specialized techniques for safe and effective wax removal. Hearing Aid Users: Regular users of hearing aids may experience more frequent wax build-up or irritation, needing careful management. For each of these conditions, we conduct a thorough initial assessment to understand your specific needs. Our approach is highly personalised, ensuring that we adapt our techniques to offer the most gentle yet effective treatment, minimizing discomfort and maximizing safety. Our goal is to provide relief while respecting the unique sensitivities of your ear health condition.
  • Can I remove ear wax at home?
While various over-the-counter products and home remedies are available for ear wax removal, it's important to approach these methods with caution due to potential risks: Ineffectiveness: Some over-the-counter solutions may not be effective for all types of ear wax or blockages, potentially leaving the problem unresolved. Risk of Impaction: Incorrect application of home remedies or misuse of ear wax removal kits can push the wax further into the ear canal, exacerbating the blockage. Potential for Ear Damage: Inexperienced handling or inappropriate tools can damage the delicate structures of the ear, leading to pain, infection, or hearing loss. Alteration of Ear Canal Environment: Certain home remedies might disrupt the natural environment of the ear canal, leading to irritation or infection. Given these risks, we strongly advise that ear wax removal should be conducted by NHS Accredited Aural Care Specialists. Our specialists are trained in safe and effective ear wax removal techniques, ensuring the procedure is performed with minimal risk and maximum comfort. Opting for professional removal by accredited specialists not only safeguards your ear health but also provides peace of mind that your ears are in expert hands.
  • How long does an ear wax removal appointment take?
30 Minutes, The length of an ear wax removal appointment in our clinic is systematically structured to be around 30 minutes. This duration is to encompass several key components of your visit: Initial Consultation: The appointment begins with a brief consultation to discuss your ear health history and any symptoms you're experiencing. This initial dialogue helps us tailor the procedure to your specific needs. Wax Removal Process: The core of the appointment is dedicated to the actual ear wax removal, utilising safe and effective methods suited to your condition. Before and After Photographs: To provide a clear understanding of the treatment's effectiveness, we capture before and after photographs of your ear drum and ear canal. These images serve as a visual record of the wax removal process and the improvement achieved. You will receive an email with these images attached for your own record. Ear Health Check: Following the removal, we conduct a ear health check to ensure that all wax has been successfully cleared and to assess the overall health of your ear canals and eardrums. While the standard appointment time is set at 30 minutes, our goal is to ensure a thorough and unhurried process, providing you with the best possible care and outcomes for your ear health. If we are unable to remove all of the wax within this appointment time, we will provide you with a complimentary follow up appointment to finish the procedure.
  • Can ear wax removal improve my hearing?
Yes, Ear wax removal can lead to noticeable improvements in hearing, especially if the wax build-up was significant enough to obstruct the ear canal. Many patients report an immediate clearness in sound and an overall improvement in their hearing capabilities post-procedure.
  • How can I prevent excessive ear wax build-up in the future?
Preventing excessive ear wax build-up is key to maintaining good ear health and avoiding the need for frequent removal procedures. Here are some strategies to help manage ear wax production: Avoid Cotton Swabs and Similar Objects: Do not insert cotton swabs, bobby pins, or other objects into the ear canal, as these can push wax further in, leading to impaction. Our rule of thumb is to insert nothing smaller than your elbow inside your ear. Stay Hydrated: Adequate hydration is essential for healthy ear wax consistency, preventing it from becoming too hard and difficult to naturally expel. Aim for the recommended daily water intake based on your age, gender, and activity level. Consider Using Over-the-Counter Ear Drops: If you're prone to dry or hard ear wax, consider using over-the-counter ear drops designed to soften wax, making it easier for the ear to naturally clear. Follow the instructions carefully and consult with our Aural Care Specialists if unsure. Regular Ear Health Check-Ups: For individuals with a history of frequent ear wax build-up or blockages, regular check-ups with an ear specialist can help monitor ear health and prevent severe impactions. These visits can also provide personalised advice and preventive treatments tailored to your needs. By following these guidelines, you can help reduce the risk of excessive ear wax build-up and maintain optimal ear health.

  • How does EARS Clinics compare to NHS ear clinics?
Choosing EARS Clinics offers several key benefits over NHS ear clinics, ensuring you receive specialised and timely care: Waiting Times: NHS clinics often have waiting times of 3-4 weeks. Our clinic typically provides same-day appointments, greatly reducing your wait and discomfort, helping to tackle ear infection before they progress. Age Range: Unlike the NHS, which may not offer ear wax removal for those under 18, our services are available to patients of all ages, ensuring comprehensive care for your family. EARS Clinics are licensed and trained to treat adults and children of all ages. Expertise: Our clinic is staffed by Aural Care Specialists, focused solely on ear health, unlike the broader medical services of the NHS. This specialisation means you receive expert care tailored for your specific needs. Pre-Treatment Protocol: The NHS often requires a pre-treatment regimen of ear oiling for a week in advance which exasperates the issue. Our clinic does not require any pre-treatment and only suggests oiling the day before and once on the day of the appointment where the patient knows that they have hard or stubborn wax. We will not turn anyone away for not oiling. Complimentary Follow-Up: In the rare event that ear wax isn't fully removed in the first visit, we offer a complimentary follow-up appointment. This contrasts with the NHS, which might advise an additional 2 weeks of ear oiling, possibly worsening the blockage. EARS Clinic prioritises your convenience, comfort, and health, providing a level of care and flexibility that stands apart from traditional NHS ear clinics.

  • I have an ear infection; can I still have ear wax removed?
The simple answer is Yes and No, Ear wax removal, through methods like Microsuction or Irrigation, is often compatible with ear infections and is even recommended by NICE guidelines under certain conditions. However, it's crucial to understand that each case must be evaluated individually. In some extreme situations, it might be more appropriate to initially treat with antibiotics. Removing ear wax can be particularly beneficial as it allows for the use of topical rather than systemic antibiotics. This means the medication can be applied directly to the site of the infection for more effective treatment. Moreover, if there's an infection present, cleaning the site and removing any debris, including ear wax, is advisable. This ensures a clean area, allowing the antibiotic to work more efficiently and effectively. Our Aural Care Specialists are exactly that, specialists. They have chosen to deal specifically with ear healthcare. They have a vast amount of experience and are able to asses each situation on an individual basis. If you have any questions or concerns, please call us on 0141 482 7004 or 0131 356 0012
  • What is ear wax and why is it produced?
Ear wax, or cerumen, is a natural substance produced by glands in the ear canal that helps protect and lubricate the ears. It acts as a barrier against dirt, dust, and bacteria. In most cases ear wax usually falls out on its own. However, many things prevent this from happening. These include; Genetics and the use of in ear devices such as ear phones, ear plugs and hearing aids. These prevent the body from naturally removing the wax and in turn compacts the wax. If you are unsure about your ear health, we suggest booking an Ear Wax Removal Appointment which also includes a free Ear Health Check. If you prefer to chat with someone over the phone, please contact us.
  • What are the methods of ear wax removal you offer?
EARS Clinics specialise in all three methods recommended by NICE: microsuction, irrigation, and manual instrumentation. Our trained Aural Care Specialists will choose the most suitable method based on your individual needs, ensuring a comfortable and effective removal process. This will be determined after our initially assessment within your appointment. If you are unsure about your ear health, we suggest booking an Ear Wax Removal Appointment which also includes a free Ear Health Check. If you prefer to chat with someone over the phone, please contact us.
  • What is microsuction and how does it work?
Microsuction is like using a tiny vacuum cleaner for your ear. A small, gentle suction device is used to carefully remove ear wax without touching the sensitive parts of your ear. It's quick and usually feels like a light tugging sensation. This method is preferred for its accuracy and minimal discomfort, making it a popular choice among our specialists. This method should never be attempted by an untrained person, as the ear canal is very small and delicate. If you are unsure about your ear health, we suggest booking an Ear Wax Removal Appointment which also includes a free Ear Health Check. If you prefer to ch at with someone over the phone, please contact us.
  • What is irrigation and how does it work?
Think of this as a mini shower for your ear canal. Warm water is gently sprayed into the ear to soften and wash away ear wax. It's a bit like the feeling you get when water goes into your ear while swimming, but controlled and gentle. We use controlled irrigation techniques to ensure a comfortable and thorough cleaning experience, avoiding any discomfort. This method should never be attempted by an untrained person, as the ear canal is very small and delicate. If you are unsure about your ear health, we suggest booking an Ear Wax Removal Appointment which also includes a free Ear Health Check. If you prefer to chat with someone over the phone, please contact us.
  • What is Instrumentation and how does it work?
This method uses specially designed tools, like tiny scoops or forceps, to carefully remove ear wax from a patients ear. Our Aural Care Specialists use this method as it is precise and gentle, ensuring effective removal of ear wax and foreign objects without discomfort. This method should never be attempted by an untrained person, as the ear canal is very small and delicate. If you are unsure about your ear health, we suggest booking an Ear Wax Removal Appointment which also includes a free Ear Health Check. If you prefer to chat with someone over the phone, please contact us.
  • Can I have my ears irrigated if I have a perforated eardrum?
No but you can have Microsuction. You should never have your ears irrigated, if you have or ever had a perforated eardrum. We recommend alternative methods like microsuction or instrumentation for patients with perforated eardrums or a history of ear surgery, ensuring a safe and suitable approach to ear wax removal. This method should never be attempted by an untrained person, as the ear canal is very small and delicate. If you are unsure about your ear health, we suggest booking an Ear Wax Removal Appointment which also includes a free Ear Health Check. If you prefer to chat with someone over the phone, please contact us.
  • How often should I have my ears cleaned?
This is not a straight forward answer. The need for ear cleaning varies among individuals. The majority of our patients book between 6-12 months after their last appointment. However we have many patients who feel the need to return every 1-3 months for regular wax removal and to obtain an ear health check. Our team at EARS Clinics can provide personalised advice on the frequency of cleanings based on your specific circumstances and ear wax production rate. If you are unsure about your ear health, we suggest booking an Ear Wax Removal Appointment which also includes a free Ear Health Check. If you prefer to chat with someone over the phone, please contact us.
  • Can I use cotton buds/swabs to clean my ears?
No, You should never insert anything into your ear that is smaller than your elbow. Yes, that's right, nothing at all. Cotton buds/swabs are not designed for cleaning inside the ear (read the box). Wax usually falls out on its own, using cotton buds/swabs will remove some wax. However it can also push a small amount of the wax back into the ear canal compressing it and over time making it harder to hear and causing ear wax compaction which can lead to infections. Other things that prevent wax from naturally falling out include; Genetics and the use of in ear devices such as ears phones, ear plugs and hearing airs. These prevent the body from naturally removing the wax and in turn compacts the wax. If you are unsure about your ear health, we suggest booking an Ear Wax Removal Appointment which also includes a free Ear Health Check. If you prefer to chat with someone over the phone, please contact us.
