Practical Day

The Rotherham NHS Foundation Trust advise as with all clinical skills competence can only be achieved by practice we therefore strongly recommend all course participants seek some supervised practice from an experienced practitioner who is competent in the procedure following the course.​

This is a hands on course, where you will be working in one of our clinics, with live patients offering you the opportunity to put theory into practice.

Ear wax removal training day

Course Content:

This course consolidates both theoretical and practical aspects of ear wax removal, through practical application including:

Practical sessions - practice your skills with both live patients and training heads. This will help to build your confidence and develop your depth perception. It will also help give you an understanding of the challenges you may come across and help you to make the right decisions when implementing care. 

Practical Session:

This session provides the opportunity to:

  • Medical History: Capturing patients ear health history and identifying contraindications.

  • Anatomy and Physiology of the Ear: Reinforce your understanding of the ear's structure and function.

  • Common Ear Pathologies: Learning to identify and manage common ear conditions, including recognising red flags that require specialist care within one of our clinics.

  • Patient Assessment: Record keeping - this will reinforce the importance of accurate record keeping, full assessment, decision making and rationale for treatment.

  • Ear Examination: Conduct ear examinations in accordance with otoscopy guidelines.

  • Principles of Ear Wax Removal: Understand the fundamental principles that guide the ear wax removal procedures.

  • Equipment Familiarisation: Identify, discuss, and utilise the appropriate equipment required for ear wax removal procedures.

  • Supervised Practice: Gain confidence in performing ear wax removal procedures under expert supervision.

  • Infection Control: Discuss and implement infection control measures to ensure safe and effective practice.

Course Materials and Certification

  • Clinical Competency Record Booklet: All course attendees would have received a Clinical Competency Record Booklet on completion of their Microsuction and Irrigation Study Days. While registered health professionals can self-certify, we recommend working through the booklet and retaining it as a record to demonstrate due diligence. This booklet can also be included in your Continued Professional Development (CPD) record. This will be filled out appropriately depending on which procedures or competencies are met on the day.  

Course Eligibility

  • Must have completed both The Rotherham NHS Foundation Microsuction, Irrigation and Instrumentation study day.

Training for Non-Registered Healthcare Workers:

We also provide training to healthcare workers who do not hold professional registration, including:

  • Health Care Assistants

  • Associate Audiologists

  • Pharmacy Assistants/Technicians

  • Other similar roles

Note: The above list is not exhaustive. Please contact us if you require further clarification.

Mentorship Requirements for Non-Registered Health Care Workers

  • Mentor Identification: If you do not hold a professional registration, you must identify a mentor who will support you in your workplace. Please provide your mentor’s details upon application.

  • Mentor Qualifications: Your mentor should be a Registered Healthcare Professional who has completed the Microsuction Course within the last two years or has attended an update course within the last two years.

  • Competency Booklet: After the course, you will be provided with a competency booklet that must be completed by both you and your mentor upon returning to practice. You have three months to complete this, after which the booklet should be returned to us for verification. Once verified, a certificate will be issued.
