Microsuction & Irrigation + Business Course Overview

Our two-day Microsuction & Irrigation + Business Course is designed to provide an optimal learning experience through small group instruction. This well-established and respected course is underpinned by comprehensive protocols recognised in the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) Guidelines.

Course Content:

This comprehensive course provides a thorough grounding in the theoretical and practical aspects of microsuction, irrigation, and business fundamentals for ear care, ensuring participants develop the skills needed for successful clinical practice and business management.

Theoretical Content:

  • Anatomy and Physiology of the Ear: Develop a deep understanding of the ear's structure and function, essential for safe and effective care.

  • Common Ear Pathologies: Learn to identify and manage common ear conditions and recognise red flags that require specialist intervention.

  • Patient Assessment: Master techniques for thorough and accurate patient evaluation.

  • Ear Examination: Conduct ear examinations confidently, following otoscopy best practices.

  • Principles of Microsuction and Irrigation: Understand the foundational principles and techniques for both procedures, including when and how to apply each method.

  • Infection Control: Explore critical infection prevention measures to maintain safe clinical environments.

Business Fundamentals:

  • Setting Up an Ear Care Practice: Learn the steps for establishing your own ear care clinic, including legal and operational considerations.

  • Marketing and Client Acquisition: Develop strategies to attract and retain clients using both online and offline marketing methods.

  • Financial Management: Gain insights into pricing, budgeting, and managing cash flow for a sustainable practice.

  • Compliance and Record Keeping: Understand the importance of maintaining accurate clinical records and adhering to industry regulations.

Practical Session:

After completing the theoretical component, participants will engage in a hands-on practical session in a clinical setting, designed to provide real-world experience and build confidence in their skills.

  • Equipment Familiarisation: Learn to identify, discuss, and use the appropriate tools for both microsuction and irrigation procedures.

  • Supervised Practice: Perform both procedures under expert supervision using practice training heads and/or patient simulators.

  • Technique Refinement: Develop precision and confidence through guided practice with feedback from experienced instructors.

  • Application of Infection Control: Apply infection control measures in a practical setting to reinforce safe practices.

Important Considerations

For health professionals new to microsuction, The Rotherham NHS Foundation Trust emphasises that for legal and ethical reasons, it is essential to initially practice the procedure on training heads.

Competence in clinical skills, such as microsuction and irrigation, is achieved through consistent practice. It is strongly recommended that all course participants seek additional supervised Practical Study Day training from an experienced practitioner who is competent in the procedure after completing the course.

Course Materials and Certification

  • Clinical Competency Record Booklet: All course attendees will receive a Clinical Competency Record Booklet. While registered health professionals can self-certify, we recommend working through the booklet and retaining it as a record to demonstrate due diligence. This booklet can also be included in your Continued Professional Development (CPD) record.
